Embedding Video into your posts

When you are creating a post in a blog, journal, wiki or discussion board you might want to embed a video from YouTube or Vimeo rather than simply linking to the video. This will allow the video to play directly within your post.

Stage One – Get the Embed Code

The first stage is to get the Embed code from the video source.

From either YouTube or Vimeo, locate the Share option.

If you are using YouTube click on Embed after you have clicked on Share. At the time of writing, from the Embed option you can click on Show More. It is recommended that you unselect the “Show suggested videos when the video finishes”.

If you are using Vimeo, clicking on Show options allows you to adjust the settings of the video.

The embed code is a long string of code that looks something like this:

<iframe src=”https://……..</iframe>

You need to select the entire string of code. Once it is selected, copy the code by pressing Ctrl and C on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can right click the mouse and select Copy.

Stage Two – Embed the code into post

Now that you have copied the embed code, you need to place this in your post. In your Blackboard module, create your post. In order to use the embed code, you need to change the text box editor to HTML mode. Do this by clicking the icon label HTML in the text box editor. If you can’t see this, click the double chevron arrows over on the far right hand side of the text box. This will reveal all the buttons – including the HTML button.

A pop up window will appear called HTML code view. Paste the embed code that you got from Stage One. Click Update to close the HTML box. Click Post Entry or Submit (depending on which tool you are using) to save your changes. The video will now be embedded in the post.
